Watch out whānau - we're expanding! 🎉

We have selected 10 tauira mīharo ana from our Senior classes to help us restore the mauri of our gully. 🌳💧

They planted 40 kawakawa underneath our larger trees this week, which will provide sweet hua for our kererū in Autumn (and for us too!). We also had a gully picnic and discovered the special plant that our area's named after - hinahina!

The kids loved how the leaves of the hinahina turn into 'skeletons' and thought it a good idea for a photo be taken 😊

In the afternoon, our 2 Enviro-Ed crews joined to make 1, which saved Matua two trips in his waka each week (we're saving the gully and the planet 😎👍). We got to know each other a bit more and enjoyed a gully picnic together too.

They enjoyed climbing two large kōwhai trees outside Te Ruma Akuhata, and then planted baby kōwhai trees in the gully... dreaming of one day when they will be able to be climbed too!

Kōwhai is not technically a native to the western bay, but it's beautiful and no doubt the spring nectar will be warmly welcomed by our tūī regardless.

Through working together to restore our whenua, many will benefit in the future. It's a long term game, but we reap what we sow. And I'm sure our manu will be thanking us this week too.

I wish you all a wonderful long weekend e hoa mā ❤️

Arohanui,

Matua Jake
