Sifting, sorting and sowing :)

The kids sifted, sorted and sowed mānuka, kānuka, harakeke & pōhutukawa seed in Enviro Ed this week. The seeds were collected by the students from mature trees in our gully last week and the kids were excited to get stuck in with planting them. 🙏

Sowing a variety of species helps ensure there's a year round supply of kai for our native wildlife too 😊

Re-vegetation is a key aspect of environmental restoration here in Aotearoa, so these kids are gaining some valuable skills for our hapori!

After some 'serious seed sowing', we had a little time left over for a gully stroll. We found a stunning pūriri grove providing a year round feast for our kereru, an old chestnut tree providing a seasonal feast for those in the know, and we even found a few species of mushrooms to marvel at!

Quote of the week:

"Look Matua, I've got a future forest on my finger!"

Well I don't know about forests growing on fingers, but there's certainly some future kaitiaki in our midst 👍

Karawhiua tamariki mā!
