Beginning to wrap up...

Before we sign off for the year I thought I'd share some of the mahi that our enviro crew have been getting up to over the last few weeks! šŸŖ‚

Ok, so we didn't go paragliding... but the kids did pot up the tÄ«toki trees they sowed earlier in the year! They were introduced to some very special species too. Ones that have been lost from the area for many years and ones that we are working to bring back, including rangiora and mākaka šŸ‘

They planted the seed of rangiora which was collected from the foothills of Otawa. They thoroughly enjoyed it, and found it's other name and usefulness as "bushman's toilet paper" rather humorous šŸ¤¦

But moving on to a more wholesome note - Predator Free BOP gifted our school 10 traps to support the work we've been doing! So the kids got busy laying them out through the gully, setting them and plotting the network out on a map (ngā mihi nui ki a koe Predator Free BOP!) šŸ¤“

Two children have caught a rat so far, and we are hoping for some more this week! The kids absolutely love checking them and the work will make a big difference for our native wildlife.

We removed some weeds and our seniors discovered a new population of tuna in the awa too! šŸ§

Lastly, the Ministry of Education came to see the awesome work the kids are doing, and were amazed by some of the knowledge these children have. The children shared this freely and showed our visitors around their gully with pride.

Great work tamariki mā, our visitors thoroughly enjoyed their time with you. Your enthusiasm is infectious šŸ™‚

Keep up the good work.

Nāku noa nā,

Matua Jake
